Fareham and Gosport Basics Bank

The Fareham and Gosport Basics Bank, a project run by Friends of the Homeless in
Fareham and Gosport (registered charity 1041277) has been supporting the economically
vulnerable in the community for over 15 years. In the past families needing food support
have been referred by one of more than 80 agencies; some of these are local schools. The
most frequently used have been Citizens Advice and family support workers, including
social workers and health visitors.
Many of you have supported us through donations of food and toiletries collected through
Harvest Festival and Christmas celebrations. We are very grateful for that support. The
generosity of your school communities enables us to be generous to those who need to
use our service.
It has been increasingly apparent during the pandemic that many of the people in financial
difficulties who struggle to buy food are families. We are very much committed to providing
the food support those families need and we are also working with Jacob’s Well to achieve
this.
We believe that for some families experience difficulties in obtaining a referral and we are
therefore contacting all schools to highlight the ways in which that might be made easier
through your involvement.
The best and most effective way is to use our online referral system which some of you
already do and this may be something you wish to engage with. If you do, please send an
email to me - philip.rutt@icloud.com and I will let you have the details.
Alternatively, you can call or send a text to 07826 305900 for Gosport or 07708 305795 for
Fareham; you can send an email to enquiries@friendsofthehomeless.org.uk or send a
message through our website https://friendsofthehomeless.org.uk/contact-us
Our desire remains to assist people in the throes of a short run crisis. In supporting people,
we have always sought to ensure that we do not create dependency and, as you are
aware, we operate policies that aim to prevent this. These include the monitoring the
number of referrals per client.
It is our policy never to deny support to anyone you tell us is in need. Thus we will always
accept your judgement concerning the needs of each individual. We continue to give
seven days food plus toiletries and in that sense, nothing has changed.
